Next Journal Club Webinar in the series:

Date: Wednesday 22 October 2025

Time17:00h Central European Time

Topic: Differential diagnosis and comparison of diagnostic algorithms in children and adolescents with autoimmune encephalitis in Spain: a prospective cohort study and retrospective analysis.

ARTICLE: CLICK HERE

Description: In this Journal Club we will discuss a large prospective cohort study of 729 children with suspected autoimmune encephalitis in Spain. The study highlights the differential diagnosis, frequent mimics such as infections, epilepsy, and psychiatric disorders, and the role of antibody testing. Importantly, it compares the performance of two international diagnostic algorithms – one general and one paediatric – with a focus on the challenging category of probable antibody-negative autoimmune encephalitis. We will reflect on the clinical implications of these findings, especially regarding the risk of over- or under-treatment with immunotherapy, and on how diagnostic accuracy can guide management and follow-up in paediatric practice.
